Census 2011

The Census happens every ten years and is a survey of the whole population. The last Census of England and Wales was held on 27th March 2011. It captures a breadth of information which can be used to help target resources more efficiently and inform policy-making.

Child poverty

Growing up in poverty can affect every area of a child’s development and future life chances. We know that the most disadvantaged children are less likely to achieve their academic potential, secure employment and gain a sense of future financial security.

Deprivation

Deprivation to many means poverty and is not an easy term to measure. Poverty impacts on families, children and the whole of society and its consequences are far-reaching.

Disability and sensory impairment

The term ‘Physical Impairment’ refers to people who have one or more physical impairments. These impairments may be congenital or acquired at any age, be temporary, long-term, or fluctuating. People with physical impairments may often have unique & multi-dimensional requirements.

Economy

Strong economic foundations are critical to the future success of an area, creating quality employment opportunities for local people. A dynamic local enterprise culture is vital for the long-term competitiveness and overall success of any local economy, and an appropriately skilled workforce is required to make the most of opportunities as and when they arise.

Housing

Affordable and suitable, warm, safe and secure homes are essential to a good quality of life yet many homes in Nottinghamshire do not meet these criteria.

Mental health

One in four adults nationally will experience mental health problems. Mental health and physical health are interlinked, with people with mental illness experiencing higher rates of morbidity and a lower life expectancy, and people with chronic physical health problems more likely to experience mental health problems.

Sexual health

Good sexual health is an important aspect of health and wellbeing, and it is vital that people have the information, the confidence and the means to make choices that are right for them, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or belief or disability.

Tobacco

Smoking causes more deaths each year than any other preventable cause. The main causes of death are cardiovascular disease, cancers and respiratory disease.

Liver Disease

Deaths from liver disease are increasing in England. This is in contrast to most EU countries where liver disease deaths are falling. In 2014 the number of people who died with an underlying cause of liver disease in England rose to 11,597. This rise is in contrast to other major causes of disease which have been declining. Liver disease is largely preventable.
