Breastfeeding has a major role to play in public health. It promotes health and prevents disease in both the short and long term for mother and baby. Breastfeeding initiation and mothers sustaining breastfeeding up to 6 to 8 weeks of age within Nottinghamshire remain lower than the average for the East Midlands and England. The Healthy Start Programme encourages pregnant women and families from low income groups to eat a more nutritious diet and to lead a healthier lifestyle. In Nottinghamshire the distribution and eligibility uptake for Healthy Start Vitamins was slightly above the average for the East Midlands and England. However, the uptake of Healthy Start Vitamins is still low, which suggests relatively few eligible women and babies are receiving free vitamin supplements.
